Road Runner Sports/ USATF-Oregon

Grand Prix Underway

The initial race of the 2010 Grand Prix Series was the Red Lizard 5 Miler. However, I was unable to give race results in the last Race Center NW issue, so here is an update.

Men's Open:

1. Ian Cronin (27)  24:31

2. Kirby Davis (25)  24:43

3. Jonathan Marcus (26)  24:48

4. Ahrlin Bauman (37)  25:18

5. Nick Johnson (23)  25:23

Ian Cronin won the $300 first prize money for the Road Runner Sports/USATF-Oregon Grand Prix. Kirby Davis won $200, and Jonathan Marcus pocketed the $100 third place cash.

Open Women:

1. Jane Rudkin (29)  29:08

2. Kristen Rohde (26)  29:28

3. Julia Rudd (27)  29:49

4. Allie Gruner (24)  30:28

5. Erin Skourtes (29)  30:36

Fortunately, all three of the Open Women were USATF-Oregon members, so they won $300, $200, and $100 respectively.

Master's Men:

1. Eric Hatmann (42)  27:25

2. Tom Kreuzpeintner (44) 27:55

3. Lawrence Merrifield (42) 28:09

4. Chuck Coats (50)  28:13

5. David Gilroy (43)  28:27

Although Eric Hatmann had the fastest Master's time of the day, he was not a USATF-Oregon member. Therefore, his time was not age-graded, and he did not win any prize money. Chuck Coats' age-graded time was 24:41 earning him $100 edging out Tom Kreuzpeintner's age-graded 27:55. Tom pocketed $50 for his effort.

Master's Women:

1. Wendy Terris (40)  31:05

2. Jeanette Groesz (60)  36:01

3. Beth Armstrong (42)  36:11

4. Kara Crisifulli (46)  36:43

5. Julie Jacobson (46)  36:47

In spite of winning by nearly five minutes, Wendy Terris' age-graded effort of 29:59 was inferior to Jeannette Groesz's 27:20. Jeannette won $100 and Wendy received $50.

Congratulations to all of the participants and to Torrey Lindbo and Team Red Lizard for hosting this Grand Prix event. Complete results can be found at www.teamredlizard.com or on the Grand Prix link at www.usatf-oregon.org website.

The Pear Blossom 10 Mile Run was a spectacular event featuring great competition at all levels. Race Directors Jerry and Zellah Swartsley even arranged for perfect running weather for this Southern Oregon classic. Kenyan Aron Rono captured the win, but many were wondering what would have happened had course record holder Max King (49:21) been in the race. Kirby Davis took home the $300 first prize money, and Jonathan Marcus earned $200 for his third place finish. Master runner Damian Baldovino placed fourth overall to earn the $100 Open prize money.

Open Men:

1. Aron Rono (27)  49:49

2. Kirby Davis (25)  50:21

3. Jonathan Marcus (26)  50:41

4. Dennis Brands (23)  55:24

5. Scott Becker (26)  56:35

6. Hal Koerner (34)  56:43

7. Justin Loftus (38)  57:32

8. Chris Rennaker (33)  59:45

10. Jedrick Baures (31)  60:40

Master's Men:

1. Damian Baldovino (43) 53:52

2. Neil Olsen (42)  56:45

3. Tom Kreuzpeintner (44) 56:49

4. Bob Julian, Jr. (41)  57:45

8. Bryon Devvore (40)  59:48

9. Craig Thornley (46)  60:09

10. Sean Campbell (43)  60:10

In the Open Women's field, ultrarunner Jenn Shelton from Ashland was the 2010 champion. Her running outfit also attracted some attention. Jenn won the $300 first place prize money, Kristen Rohde from Portland earned the $200 second place money, and Maggie Donovan, the sixth place finisher, took home the $100 third place prize money. Remember, you cannot participate in the Grand Prix scoring or receive prize money unless you are a current USATF-Oregon Association member.

7. Rosa Gutierrez (46)  72:55

8. Jeanette Groesz (60)  74:12

9. Kimberly Rice-Narusch (42) 74:13

10. Nicki Wright (50)  74:35

The age-graded Masters' men and women results were not available by my Race Center deadline, so I will have them for the next issue.

The next Grand Prix Oregon event took place on May 2 in Track Town USA. The Eugene Half-Marathon was run on a fast, flat, and scenic USATF certified course and finished on the track at historic Hayward Field. This was our longest Grand Prix event for 2010. You can find out race results/information at www.eugenemarathon.com. With this event you were truly "Running in the Footsteps of Legends". I will have a summary of results in the next issue of Race Center NW magazine.

On July Fourth, the Butte-to-Butte 10k will take place in Eugene, and this race is a classic! The race starts at 8:00 a.m. and goes up the Donald hill for the first mile then comes screaming down Fox Hollow into Eugene and finishes in Skinner Butte Park. Last year had over 8,000 runners, so you need to register early. You can register online (or request an entry form) at www.buttetobutte.org. Registration will also take place at the Hilton Hotel on Thursday, July 1, Friday, July 2, and Saturday, July 3. There is NO race day registration for this USATF certified 10k event.

The final event for the 2010 Grand Prix will be hosted by the Bowerman Athletic Club and will be a 5k event in Beaverton. The race will start at 7:00 p.m. and is hosted at the NIKE World Campus. The course will feature a fast two lap venue, and there will be live music and a party to follow. The entry fee is $25 and includes a race shirt. There will also be random NIKE raffle prizes. Registration information can be found from the Bowerman AC link on the www.runnerspace.com/ORRGP website.

As the weather warms up and summer approaches, get out there for a race and celebrate running!
